Qualifications to Work at the Polls

Under, Rhode Island General Law 17-11-12, in order to work at the polls a person must be:

  • a registered voter in Rhode Island
  • able to read and write the constitution of the state in English
  • Able to read & write his or her own name

Under, Rhode Island General Law 17-11-15 & 17-11-12, a person cannot work as a pollworker if they are a candidate for public office, or if they have been convicted, found guilty, pleaded guilty, or nolo contendere, or placed on deferred or suspended sentence, or on probation, for any crime which involves moral turpitude or which constitutes a violation of any of the election or caucus laws of this or any other state

Federal, state, and municipal employees are prohibited from working as pollworkers in a primary election., but they are permitted to work in a general election.

A pollworker is not required to live in the city/town in which they are working.
